What is a MUSH?

A MUSH is an online, text based game. While it generally stands for Multi-User Similuated Hallucination, it's since gotten other names to go with the acronym.

But, basically, it is a place where real people from all over the world can join a strictly text based server and roleplay out a certain theme. Think of it as your old TTRPG days, but there's actual code to keep track of your character and do things.

Now just because there's code means you don't also RP! RP is the main focus, whether you're using coded system or not. Bulding relationships, having fun with new people going into a combat mission with a team, visiting a market...it's all on the table and more than open for the players to participate in.

The basics of RP (Role Playing)

Roleplaying/Role Playing (hereafter just called RP) is the main source of in character communication and things happening. Whether you're talking at a bar, fighting, adopting a cat, or in a war, RP is how everything in the game generally works

There are some coded commands to add life to RP, such as a combat system, and lots more being put in, but they never make up for actual RP. If you ever feel a coded system is making RP less beneficial, let staff know.

Some dos and don'ts are you venture into your first RP.

A GOOD example

Hige enters the room, shrouded in a dark cloak that covers his body from head to toe. He pauses in the doorway to look around take in the current inhabitants for any possible dangers. His eyes briefly scan over those in the room before heads over towards an empty table to wait for a barmaid to bring him some food and drink. Once the lady arrives with the standard fair, he slips her a small coin to cover the amount, as well as a room for the night. While he eats his food and drinks his drink, he sits with his back to a corner, giving him a good vantage point of the rest of the crowd while doing his very best to simply blend in to the crowd.

Why this works:
  • The pose describes what my character is doing.
  • The post describes no interactions with other players, and instead only briefly 'controls' an NPC of minor consequence. You should never 'emit' someone who is a player or is a high level person as staff uses those for plots.
  • While there's nothing wrong with approaching other players, you must ensure you don't ever pose their response, not even so much as looking at you.

A NOT SO GOOD example

Hige enters the room and immediately pushes Zori out of his chair on the ground, waiting for him to get back up. Then he throws a swing and punches him in the jaw.

Why this doesn't work:
  • The pose is forcing another charcter's actions, which is the biggest transgression. In this instance you would TRY to push Zori out of his chair, and let his player respond in their next pose.
  • The pose is short and gives no informatinon about your own character. Not only is this bad form, but you probably don't reach the XP threshold.
  • And just to re-iterate, when you're attacking or doing something to another player, you 'try' to do it. If it's not a rolled system, there's no guarantee.
We know as you are getting your footing into RP you aren't going to be writing a lot, or maybe even well, but as long as you follow some basic tenants, you'll not upset others and we can all get along amicably
Just as a note: If your pose is under 200 characters (really, a rather low limit), you won't gain XP.

Terminology

Before we get any further, let's learn some basic terminology!

Term!

Description!

IC (In Character) An IC action is something you are doing while RPing, that your character is actually doing!
OOC (Out of Character) An OOC action is something you're doing out of character, such as OOC talk, paging, or channel discussions. You aren't using the posing commands.
Pose A pose is the action your charcter is doing on an IC level. The above RP basics are examples.
Page A page is a Direct Message, generally, between you and another player. Good for questions or just to chat. You can add more players to a page if you like.
Channel The game have a comsys, generally 'Public', 'Newbie' and 'Code'. You are free to leave and join these channels as you like.

Now for the fun part, MUSH commands!

OOC Communication

There are a variety of commands for communication, and we will briefly touch on them here. Note that the parenthesis are just to tell you where information goes and shouldn't be included.

Page

Description

A page is a private message between you and other player(s)

Command

p (player/player list)=(text)

Example

p juggernaut=Test

Outcome

Channels

Description

A channel is a global chat between all those that have joined that channel.

Command

=(chan alias) (text)

Example

=new Channel test

Outcome

OOC

Description

The OOC command allows you to speak OOCly in an otherwise IC room. This allows you to separate out questions, comments, or idle chatter from actual RP.

Command

ooc (text)

Example

ooc This is an example!

RP Commands

RP Commands are those that you actually use to role play with others. They're all very similar, just how they start changes.

Command

Description

Example

:(text) Your pose will start with your name, followed by your text. :sits at the bar.
Alpha sits at the bar.
;(text) Your pose will start with your name, but without a space, followed by your text. ;'s a silly boy.
Alpha's a silly boy.
"(text) Your pose will appear in this order. (your name) says, "(text)". For strict speaking poses. "This is it!
Alpha says, "This is it!"
@emit (text) Complete freeform entry. What shows is what you type, no name prepending. @emit This is a test.
This is a test.

A few last things...

Movement
The game is fully text based, obviously, and eveything is typed in. When you're in a room you'll see 'exits', then the full name of the exit as well as an alias. You can type the full name or the alias to 'move' to that room from your current one.

In this example you would type sw to move to that room.
